Steps to Resolve Conflict at the School Level
We encourage individuals to try to resolving their issue with the school staff or administration first. Try the first step and if you are not satisfied, or need help along the way, contact the Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education.
-
Speak to the school staff member you are in conflict with. If you are uncomfortable alone or if speaking up is not part of your culture, you may bring an advocate or a family member. If English is not your first language, request that the school provide an interpreter.
-
Request a meeting with that school staff member’s supervisor or the school principal.
-
Each time you decide to take the question to a new level, let the last person know, and keep the discussion open to find ways to create a solution. Also, keep documentation of who you spoke with and what the outcome was. If none of this works, contact the Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education.
- If you are school staff and are having an issue with another staff member, try to contact the principal to resolve the issue. If you are having an issue with the principal or don’t feel comfortable talking your issue through with the principal, contact the Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education.
